About Therealreal.com Prices and Cost?
TheRealReal is a luxury consignment platform that sells pre-owned designer items. The pricing of items on the site is determined by a blend of expert knowledge and a proprietary algorithm. Factors that determine the prices include the item's condition, its resale value, and market trends. The better the condition of the item, the higher the resale value. High-demand items and newer items are more likely to have a higher resale value. The platform uses real-time internal and external data to determine the highest price possible. This includes search data, demand signals, and competitive analysis. The platform employs hundreds of experts and authenticators, including gemologists and horologists, who inspect thousands of items each day. Sellers can earn up to 85% of the sales price, which is claimed to be three times more than other resellers. However, it's worth noting that the commission rate can be as high as 80% of the item's value, depending on the item and its value. This makes selling on TheRealReal more expensive compared to platforms like eBay or Poshmark. The payment to sellers for sales is made on the 15th of the month following the sale. The platform also runs sales where items can be discounted up to 75% off. For example, an item with an estimated retail price of $15,500 was listed for $12,995 and then discounted to $7,797 during a sale. The platform sells a wide range of items including clothing, bags, shoes, accessories, jewelry, and watches from top designers like Chanel, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Cartier, Prada, Christian Dior, Saint Laurent, Rolex, Tiffany & Co., Valentino, and Fendi. It also features emerging brands and offers vintage items. The platform is known for its rigorous authentication process and is considered a leader in authenticated luxury consignment. It aims to extend the lifecycle of luxury items and promotes sustainable shopping.
How does pricing work on TheRealReal?
TheRealReal uses a blend of expert knowledge and a proprietary algorithm to determine prices. The pricing is influenced by several factors including the condition of the item, its resale value, and current market trends. Items in better condition have a higher resale value. High-demand items, such as those from Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Gucci, Rolex, and rare vintage items, retain more of their value. Newer items are also more likely to have a higher resale value. TheRealReal uses real-time internal and external data to determine the highest price possible. This includes search data, demand signals, and competitive analysis. TheRealReal employs hundreds of experts and authenticators, including gemologists and horologists, who inspect thousands of items each day to ensure the best price for each item. Sellers can earn up to 85% of the sales price. TheRealReal makes money when the seller does, so the goal is to earn the seller the highest amount possible every time they sell.
What are the authentication processes for items on TheRealReal?
TheRealReal employs a rigorous, brand-specific authentication process that utilizes both human expertise and AI and machine learning. As the largest marketplace for authenticated luxury consignment, TheRealReal has an extensive set of data that serves as the backbone of the authentication process. Many of the products are run through proprietary authentication technology such as TRR Vision and TRR Shield, which examine everything from the specifics of an item's construction to its liability for counterfeit. TheRealReal has also developed its own measurement device for mounted stones, which improves accuracy over conventional methods. Fine jewelry and watches are authenticated and appraised by gemologists and horologists, and each piece comes with a valuation certificate. Art items are thoroughly researched and validated by a team of fine art specialists. The team works diligently and is constantly innovating to maintain the highest standards and keep fraudulent products off the market. TheRealReal is the only resale company in the world that authenticates every single item it sells, doing more to remove fakes from the market every day and put counterfeiters out of business. Items are received and identified as "high" or "low" risk based on brand, value, style, etc. If there is a higher probability for counterfeiting, the product is deemed higher risk in authenticating. Items that are considered "high risk" are sent to authenticators with significant authentication experience, who are highly specialized in specific categories. Many of these authenticators join TheRealReal from the luxury brands themselves or auction houses with a deep knowledge of the markers, materials, and craftsmanship behind genuine products. They assess each item based on these and other characteristics. Items that are considered "low risk" are sent to be authenticated by copywriters, who receive deep training in authentication.
